What is a Rat?

Rats are rodents that belong to the genus Rattus. They have coarse fur, long tails, pointed snouts, and small ears. There are two species of rat commonly found in the United States – Norway Rats (also known as brown rats) and Roof Rats (also known as black rats). Norway rats are typically larger than roof rats with thick bodies and short tails while roof rats have slender bodies and longer tails. Both species prefer to live near people where they can find food, water, and shelter; however, Norway rats tend to live in basements or lower levels of buildings while roof rats inhabit attics or upper levels of buildings.

Spotting Signs of a Rat Infestation

The most common sign of an infestation is seeing a rat in your home or business. Other signs include droppings (usually about 1/4 inch long with blunt ends), gnaw marks on wood surfaces, burrows near foundations or along walls, tracks (footprints left behind by rats), smudge marks from their oily coats rubbing up against walls or baseboards, scratching noises coming from inside walls or ceilings at night, and strong odors similar to ammonia due to their urine. Additionally, you may see damaged goods such as food containers that have been chewed through by a rat looking for food.

How To Prevent Rats

The best way to prevent a rat infestation is by making sure that your home or business is not attractive for them in the first place: clean up any spilled food or crumbs immediately; store food properly in sealed containers; keep countertops clean; dispose of garbage regularly; seal off any potential entry points such as cracks in foundations or around doorways; inspect furniture for evidence of nesting before bringing it inside your home; trim back shrubbery away from the outside walls of your building; remove any clutter inside your house that could provide hiding spots for rodents; use traps if necessary; and contact a pest control professional if you suspect an infestation has already taken hold.
